“Grounding” architecture. Rethinking the territorial links (in the works of Le Corbusier) (full text)
The paper examines the relationship between architecture and landscape through the building’s structural articulation to the ground. The building as the material expression of architecture is a dynamic element of the geography of the place, in which emerging
Could ground be the main plateau upon which critical links between architecture and place established?
During the Modern Movement Le Corbusier declare his great concern on the role of ground in his architecture.
In his “Five Points of Architecture” (1925) there is an obvious interest for different articulations and links between building and ground. Two of them, refer directly to this concept: The “pilotis” and the “roof garden”. In the first case, a liberating disconnection suggested through the building’s complete release from the ground. An absolute freedom of movement, through an unbroken ground continuity . (Villa Savoye) The second proposes a dynamic transfer of ground to a higher building layer. (terrasse de jardin).
Either referred to an urban or a natural landscape, like his “petite maison” (1923-24), Le Corbusier records the changes (seasonal and aging) of his small “terrasse de jardin”, as an integral element of the temporality of the building in its constant relationship with nature.
There is, however, one more important architectural gesture in his buildings, which, despite the fact that intentionally wasn’t incorporated into the " five points of architecture “, it was displayed, as “une grande manière”, to the most of his work.
The “architectural promenade”, which often expressed as a form of continuous ramp, could be considered the most clear transcription of the ground in the structure of his buildings. It constitutes the architectural concept of a “walking path” within the interior of the building, but at the same time, the manner in which extended and arranged inside it, constitutes a direct integration of the surrounding landscape.
The transcription of this ground introduction inside the building, creates a "double substance" unity, concerning the subject and his relationship to architecture, in the Le Corbusier’s work, such as in villas Savoye and Stein de Monzie.
More specifically , from one hand, reveals the perception of a strict structural grid of order and proportions , which is modulated through the architectural promenade. And from the other hand, there is a strong and different quality’s perception. A kind of a sensorial freedom, concerning an intentional walk through space, where someone can use all his senses, in order to experience the landscape in its constant connection with the structural concept of the building and also with the elements, constituting the surrounding geography of the place.
